Did You Know...
"The same sensory input can trigger a negative emotion or a positive one, depending on the memories associated with it."* That is why one person can get excited when the snow starts in November while their partner gets depressed. Each of us actually experiences the world differently.

Holly Birkeland, M.A.
Licenced Associate Marriage and Family Therapist

I have been married for 29 years and have three children. Parenting has been an incredible journey which now takes a new direction as my two sons and daughter enter young adulthood.
My passion is working with individuals and couples in middle age. Consider all of the challenges occurring during this time, from child rearing to child launching, to helping elderly parents, to worries about money and being able to plan for retirement, to fighting over the same issues without resolution, to sex drive differences or other physical changes, to just plain growing apart. Sadly, middle-age is often a time when marital satisfaction plummets.
But I believe that how you weather these challenges has a lot to do with the kind of patterns you’ve established throughout your relationship. In therapy, we can explore those patterns and work on altering those that keep getting you stuck. Like any change you attempt, it takes work and it can be difficult, but it is very satisfying to have worked with so many couples who change how they relate and find a closer connection and more satisfaction.
I have a Masters degree in Marriage and Family Therapy from St. Mary’s University of Minnesota with an undergraduate degree from the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis. I have had professional careers in television news and advertising, so I might recognize some of the pressures you face that are brought on by busy lives, employment issues, and career fulfillment.
I am interested in working with people of various ethnicities, cultures, and sexual orientation. I’d be honored to hear your story and explore your goals. Please contact me for a free thirty-minute consultation, which is a good opportunity to see if we’re a good fit before we begin working together.
